Lavareit Alm

The name derives from "La’Vare", i.e. “Rock", and indeed the pasture is located on the eastern flanks of Mount Terzo, offering a view that covers the area from Mount Crostis to the southern feet of Mount  Paularo, and including the highest peaks of the Carnic range, those of Mount Coglians and Creta della Chianevate. From a naturalistic point of view, the location allows visitors to admire the following species: yarrow and mountain arnica, great yellow gentian, stemless gentian, blackcocks and wood grouses. The end of the hairpin bends coincides with the start of the trail (CAI n. 155) leading to the Lower Mount Terzo shelter and to the homonymous mountain; from here, by proceeding along the northern flank (CAI trail n. 175), you can descend towards the Chiauls Grande shelter and reach the Lavareit malga. Here you can visit the outdoor Museum of Pal Piccolo, the location of some of the main conflicts in the “Carnia Area” during the Great War; along the itinerary, visitors encounter a succession of caves adapted for military use, small barracks, a covered trench and finally the post known as the “Nose of the Machine Guns”. On the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 1866 metres a.s.l, you can tread the labyrinthine Austro-Hungarian walkways and trenches, while the Italian flank features the so-called "Trincerone italiano" (1860 metres a.sl.), clear proof of the sheer vicinity of the two frontlines during the war and of the harshness of clashes between the two sides.
