Pordenone area
The malghe of this district are grouped into two different geological contexts: the Cansiglio-Cavallo ridge at the border between the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions, and the lower valleys of the Friuli Dolomites. Despite its rainy climate, the former is characterized by karstification and a consequent shortage of water, while the latter features gravelly soil generated by the local torrents. There are many Alpine Leontopodiums on the pastures of this flank, despite its low altitude. The lower valley is worth visiting for its many fascinating historical and naturalistic landmarks. For example, the remains of a hunting camp dating back to 11.000 BC were discovered near the Cansiglio Wood. Food products from the area are also excellent: we recommend the Caneva FigoMoro, the malga cheese, the extra virgin olive oil, the red wines and the Caneva verdisio, a white wine from a native vineyard. Furthermore, the "Palù di Livenza" Archaeological Park is interesting for its pile dwelling remains and numerous finds dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic. The area is also noteworthy in terms of its ecological value. The site is shortlisted to be included among the ancient Alpine settlements, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage category. Near Polcenigo, you can visit the hamlet of Gorgazzo, famous for the intense blue surface of its water spring. This is a site of unmeasurable naturalistic value.
