Zoncolan-Arvenis-Dauda Ridge
The geological diversity of Mount Arvenis, set within the geological context of the Zoncolan, gives birth to suggestive vegetal variations. The lack of water forced past inhabitants of the malghe to create a series of pasture pools that still today ensure the presence of drinking water for grazing animals and wild fauna. Before climbing to higher altitudes you can visit the canyon of the Vinadia Gorge, considered to be among the most demanding in the Alpine area, with a depth in excess of 200 m. The full trail into the gorge requires training and specific mountaineering equipment. The itinerary presents a constant alternation of waterfalls, small lakes and long passages flanked by rocky walls so close to one another that walkers can barely see the sky from within the gorge. The name comes from that of the ancient queen of the Carni, Vinadia, who threw herself off these cliffs to avoid being captured by her pursuers, the Romans. Another site worth visiting is the Plateau of Lauco-Curiedi: a large area characterized by rolling hills, small valleys, springs and a varied vegetation consisting of fields, meadows and woods, where you can enjoy splendid views. The site also features many naturalistic rarities such as the peatlands, groundwater habitats inhabited by carnivorous plants and native orchids.
