High Tagliamento Valley

The Valley housing the springs of the longest river in the region is characterized by its strongly diversified flanks; cattle pastures are mainly located on the eastern side, while the southern flank features the peaks of the Cridola and Pramaggiore. Malghe dedicated to milk production are located in the more tourism-friendly areas, such as Mount Varmost and the Pura pass. The landscape one can observe from these positions is truly suggestive, as these pastures look directly onto the Friuli and Belluno Dolomites. Before climbing towards the malga, you may want to visit Upper Forni, featuring the characteristic hamlet of Vico, listed in the club of the most authentic villages in Italy. Lower Forni boasts interesting nineteenth century fountains in Tredolo, Baselia and Vico. Other landmarks worth highlighting are the Davanzo Picture Gallery in Palazzo Unfer in Ampezzo, a fascinating collection of artworks, and the local geological museum, displaying rocks and fossils that cover a time span of 400 million years. Other interesting buildings in Ampezzo are the Church of Saint Daniel, the Church of the Holy Trinity (in Oltris) and the XVII century Palazzo Beorchia - Nigris, a typical example of Carnic architecture.
