Carnic and Julian Prealps
The malghe in this district are located on the mountains overlooking the sea-bound course of the Tagliamento River towards the Adriatic. There are many towns and villages in the valley below, worth visiting for their history and charming naturalistic features. Their vicinity to the Cornino repopulation centre means these pastures are often visited by griffons, whose elegant flight circles the impressive peaks that dominate the Friuli plain. Above Riviasio, along the road connecting Villa Santina to Chiaicis, is the spring of “La âga dal paradîsj/The water of paradise”, considered to have healing effects. Nearby the valley, the torrent Arzino descends along a series of spectacular waterfalls. We recommend visiting the lake of the three towns in Trasaghis, while in the Braulins area you shouldn’t miss the church of San Michele dei Pagani, built at the time of the Lombards and leaning against a rocky spur. In Forgaria del Friuli and its surroundings we must highlight: the Mount Prat Plateau, a splendid natural basin featuring one-of-a-kind fauna and flora.
