Julian Alps
The Julian Alps mountain range is certainly among the most suggestive in our region. The three parallel main valleys (the Val Resia, Val Raccolana and Val Dogna) culminate on plateaus featuring malga settlements dedicated to the production of milk. Higher still, set against the sky, the harsh calcareous peaks are dominated by ibex, reintroduced at the end of the 1970s after they had become completely extinct in the area. The towns one can visit in the bordering areas are Malborghetto-Valbruna, Camporosso, Tarvisio, Sella Nevea and Chiusaforte. The road leading from Tarvisio to Sella Nevea passes through Cave del Predil, known for the Raibl International Geological and Mining Park. The lead and zinc mine, no longer in use since 1991, can be visited aboard a special train. The mining exhibition is particularly well curated and illustrates the history of the town: mining activities in the town allegedly date back as far as pre-Roman times (800 BC).
